wind energy refers to the use of the kinetic energy of air movements to generate electricity. This was then converted into mechanical work for grinding grain and other materials as well as for irrigation and drainage of landscapes. Modern wind power plants work similarly, because the wind that strikes the rotor blades drives a generator inside the plant that generates electricity.
Advantages and disadvantages of using wind energy
Wind energy is available in large quantities almost everywhere in the world and can therefore be used in countless places to generate electricity. The kinetic energy of the air currents is independent of the solar radiation, the climate and the weather, the vegetation and the nature of the landscape. Wind is considered a cheap and clean energy source, whose use is associated with low pollution. The need to drastically reduce CO2 emissions as an essential measure of international environmental protection makes wind energy an alternative to energy generation of increasing importance. The price of electricity generated by wind energy has meanwhile become much more competitive, which has significantly increased its share on a global scale. The construction of wind farms, however, is criticized by environmentalists, as the facilities represent a threat to the wildlife of the region concerned. Especially for birds is from the blades located in fifty to one hundred meters high, a significant danger, because they can get caught there and injured or killed. In addition, critics also point to the aesthetic impairment of the landscape through the wind turbines. Petitions and protests by residents who fear noise pollution often prevent the construction of inland wind farms. As a result, more and more attention is now being paid to the construction of such power plants in offshore marine waters. Contrary to popular belief, wind turbines use only small areas and can even be installed on tall buildings. In the future, direct-on-house wind turbines combined with solar energy could provide a reliable source of energy and heat for households in an environmentally friendly manner.
